Fourth grade is an exciting time for our students! Our Core Knowledge curriculum takes them on literature journeys through the readings of Gulliver’s Travels, Treasure Island, Robin Hood, and Robinson Crusoe, to name a few. Various stories, myths and poetry lend themselves to our History and Geography content.
Major areas of study for students will be World Geography, Europe in the Middle Ages, Ancient China, The American Revolution and The Constitution. “Curriculum Days” will bring these particular subject topics to life through student projects and activities. Field trips are also geared toward enriching specific curriculum content.
Science content will include the study of The Human Body, Chemistry, Electricity, Geology and Meteorology!
Our fourth graders will be taking the State-wide Florida Writes exam this spring. As such, our writing curriculum will be focused on perfecting their narrative and expository essay skills, while ensuring they pay close attention to proper grammar and use of mature language.
Each fall, fourth grade hosts our annual Oasis Thanksgiving Day Parade for our school and community. Afterwards, the fourth grade classes partake in flag football games and tailgating. This is certainly a day you won’t want to miss!
All in all, this is a year of great growth for our students. Partnering with their parents and working together as a team, we envision a very memorable, exciting year for your child.

When describing fifth grade, I believe the great Dr. Seuss described it best when he stated, “Oh the places you’ll go!” Fifth grade curriculum and activities are an adventure for students. With this being the students last year in elementary school we understand what a monumental and transitional time this is. Challenges and academic achievements await each student in fifth grade, as we begin to prepare students for middle school next year. Our Core Knowledge curriculum allows us to study a vast array of topics while reaching the students through technology, cooperative learning, one-on-one instruction, and small group instruction.
In history, we venture west with the pioneers on the Oregon Trail and study both sides of the Civil War. The eccentric Maya, Aztec, & Incas are examined, as well as the numerous explorers like Magellan, Vespucci, and Dias. We will study the art, culture, people, and beliefs of the Renaissance. While visiting other places like Japan and Russia, students explore the geography of the world. We will also study closely the extensive and exciting history of the United States.
Mathematics takes us on a voyage through geometry, long division, data and statistics, measurement, ratios, percentage and much more. Students are asked to not only compute the problems, but also to explain the reasoning behind their answer. This is only one of the many areas where we incorporate writing. Writing is integrated throughout our entire curriculum.
Science is of great importance and an assortment of topics are covered throughout the year like the functions of plants, life processes, habitats and ecosystems of animals, earth’s features, matter and energy. During the year we focus intently on the scientific method and perform experiments depicting this method. Students are then asked to participate in the annual science fair, using the scientific method skills incorporated throughout the year.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Sherlock Holmes, Little Women, Don Quixote, and The Secret Garden are a few of the fantastic places we go through the world of reading! Students also create quarterly book reports that differ in genre and include game boards, posters, case files, and more.
Students can look forward to our culminating project, “Night at the Museum” where our Core Knowledge curriculum comes to life through the persona of their character or figure in history. It is truly a magnificent opportunity for students to display the great knowledge they have gained from the many different areas we cover throughout the year. Also, the graduation trip is always a hit with the students, as we head to Busch Gardens in Tampa as a grand finale for the year! Students who work hard reap great benefits!
Finally, we encourage parents to take an active role in their child’s education and welcome volunteering both in and out of class. The Fifth Grade team hopes to make this an incredibly memorable and eventful year for your child! “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the one who'll decide where you'll go. Oh the places you'll go.”

The gifted program at OCES is an enhanced curriculum based on Core Knowledge concepts, and is differentiated for each grade level. This fast paced curriculum extends student’s learning as it incorporates critical thinking skills, research and problem solving as well as a greater level of complexity across subject areas than would normally be found in the classroom. It allows students to work at their own pace, so that areas of interest can be explored according to individual needs. The gifted program here is a part-time program that services students one day each week by grade level. Students are selected for this program by his/her classroom teacher. The process starts with a six week observation period where work samples/anecdotal records are collected. The Gifted Assessment Team will evaluate the student and his/her portfolio and will make a recommendation for gifted testing. A school psychologist will administer an IQ test to determine if the student qualifies for the program. Once a child qualifies for gifted services, they will continue to receive gifted services throughout their entire academic career.
What students are considered gifted?
Isn’t everyone gifted in some area?
Florida Statute 6A-6.03019 identifies gifted students as those with a need for special program, a majority of characteristics of gifted students and superior intellectual development as measured by an individually administered standardized test of intelligence. The term “gifted” does not demote a person who is talented in a particular area: it is not intended as an elitist label. It is a legal term.

The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program is a very wide and varied program. It is the top of the “umbrella” that covers many areas such as Gifted, Speech, Learning disabilities, emotional concerns and health impairments. Students go through a staffing process before they enter the ESE program. If a student is found to be eligible for services an individual education plan (IEP) is written which contains goals and objectives to meet the students’ educational needs.
The ESE teacher and staff work with the student, the parents and school personnel to help the student be successful in reaching their goals and meeting their needs.

Welcome to Physical Education at Oasis Charter Elementary School. Students will need to wear tennis shoes and girls wearing dresses must have shorts on underneath. Our class goal is for students to achieve active and healthy lives through lifelong fitness. In this class we focus on movement skills such as locomotor, nonlocomotor and manipulative skills, body/space awareness, games, individual/team sports, health and safety. We also teach character education. Students will learn sportsmanship, teamwork, problem solving and leadership skills. We have two significant events throughout the course of the year. Jump Rope for Heart is an event sponsored by the American Heart Association. Students raise money to help prevent heart disease and stroke. In the spring, we have field day. During this event; students participate in different relay races with their classroom teacher. We look forward to seeing you in class!

Welcome to the Communication Club!
I hope everyone had a terrific summer and is ready to begin another fabulous school year at Oasis! I am so happy to be back again this year as the Speech Language Pathologist working with your child in the areas of speech and language. For those new parents, students may call me "Ms. Jill". I can't wait to meet all our new friends this year in our Elite Communication Club!
Once your child is scheduled in speech or language therapy, they will receive a Communication Club folder. This folder will be my way of communicating with you on a weekly basis. Your child will receive home practice activities to ensure carryover of the newly learned skills and speech sounds. You will find daily practice ideas for each month on our Monthly Practice form inside the folder. Also, inside their folder is a Communication Club Card. Students who have their folder, completed their work and have tried their best during the session are eligible for a "punch" on their Communicaton Club Card. Once the card is filled, students may turn it in for a "Work Perk" (ex., lunch with me, Speech teacher for the day, etc.) Each card they fill up gives them a more elite status in the club, (ex, Black Card, Gold Card, Platinum, and the Diamond Card). Ask your child to explain the "Perks" of each membership!
It is very important to send your child to school with their Communication Club folder on the days they are scheduled. This way information can be brought home and returned in a more timely, efficant manner. Inside their folder, in addition to the Communication Club Card, you will see a stapled Daily Log. Here is where you will see how your child did in therapy for each day.
Remember ~ their folder HAS to be brought to school in order for comments to be shared!
Schedules are made in cooperation with the student's classroom teacher. It is designed to best meet your child's speech and language needs with as little disruption to their school day as possible. The schedules are located inside your child's Communication Club folder.
I look forward to another great year in Speech and Language! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

The state of Florida requires that we inform parents when teachers are out of field or not meeting highly qualified status. Oasis Elementary has a teacher taking the subject area exam to be highly qualified and a number of teachers working towards ESOL endorsements which is required for them to be considered in field. For additional information you can contact the office or schedule a conference with Mr. Hook.
